HMS Progress Reporting

Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, students and parents will receive revised progress report and report card communication about student learner characteristics, progress toward standards, and achievement over the course of a semester.

The purpose of creating changes to our reporting document is to give students and parents more specific feedback about areas of strength and areas for growth in a given content area, as well as to share information about the student's study and work habits in class.

Decisions about the format and components of the reporting documents were made through a partnership between parents and staff at Highcrest. Throughout this first year of implementation, feedback will be gathered and components will be adjusted as needed.

Below is specific information about the HMS Reporting Documents and timeline, and at the top of the page, you can find links to Frequently Asked Questions about Standards-Based Reporting, as well as Resources for Parents.

COMPONENTS OF THE REPORTING SYSTEM

LEARNER DESCRIPTORS

The Learner Descriptors on the HMS Progress Report and Report Card are:

  • ENGAGED LEARNER

  • PREPARED LEARNER

  • SELF-DIRECTED LEARNER

Click HERE for a detailed description of the Learner Descriptors, and to learn more about how they will be marked on the reporting documents.

PRIORITY STANDARDS/PROGRESS

Each content area on the reporting documents will have priority standards for that content area listed. While there are many more standards covered in each area, these priority standards highlight major targets for your child as he or she progresses through a given class.

Priority standards are marked with a 4 (Extending or applying standards), 3 (Mastery of the standards), 2.5 (Approaching the standard) 2 (Developing proficiency toward standards) or 1 (Experiencing difficulty with the standard). It is important to remember that a mark of a "4" will be used in rare circumstances, and is something to aim for over the course of the semester or the year, rather than a starting place. At progress reporting time, more 2's will be likely, as mid-semester many learning objectives have not been fully addressed.

Click HERE for a detailed description of priority standards and how they are marked on the reporting documents.

ACHIEVEMENT GRADE

Each content area will be marked with a letter grade at the end of the semester. Progress reports will not contain an achievement grade, as the purpose of the achievement grade is to give a summative indication of the student's progress and achievement with respect to multiple standards in that class.

Click HERE for more information about the achievement letter grades, and how they are determined.

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

The elementary and Highcrest report cards have similar components. Please see the comparison table below to see similarities and differences between the two report cards.
