Reading Challenge

About the HMS Reading Challenge

The purpose of the Highcrest Reading Challenge is to expose the HMS community to a variety of noteworthy books for middle school readers.

2023-2024 Books

How can I participate?

Between now and April, read as many books as possible on your grade's list. You may read the books for projects, fish bowl reading, free reading, etc.

What if I finish all 20 books?

Let your ELA teacher know, and fill out our form HERE! (Also linked above!) We love honoring our finishers through announcements on our weekly WHMS News broadcasts!  NEW this year - your name will be put up on the LMC wall.

How do I participate in the Spring Challenge?

To participate in the Spring Challenge, sign up with your ELA teacher by the end of April (date TBA). We will send out communications for you to sign up. You must have completed at least 5 titles from the list by this time to participate.

How does it work?

Participants are placed on teams of 3-4 students. You will be informed of your team and a scheduled time to take the big Challenge! You may work with your teammates to review and prepare for the test.

The Challenge occurs during school - students get to leave class! Your team has 30 minutes to work together on a 25 question test. The answers to the questions will be the book titles. You are not allowed to use the book list or any other notes!

And if you win...

Prizes are awarded to the top scoring team for each grade level. In addition, Reading Challenge contest participants who read 15 or more Challenge books by the end of the school year are invited to a special Reading Challenge party!
